Thoughts on The Serenity Prayer

I am an anxious, cowardly fool.

I am willing to not be an anxious, cowardly fool but help will be required if I am able to avoid that fate.

Why is it called The Serenity Prayer? Why not The Courage Prayer, The Wisdom Prayer or The Acceptance Prayer?

In my experience, Courage and Wisdom facilitate Serenity. Courage is the key that must be turned in order to start the engine.

According to the OED:

Serenity is the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.

Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one – or strength in the face of pain or grief.

Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment.

By God’s grace I am both calm and courageous. My judgement is sound and I relinquish control.

I am calm, courageous and wise.
